– Statement in response to communities reopening during COVID-19 pandemic

Over the past months, it seems much in our world has been turned upside down as we – as a community – have come together to grapple with the implications of COVID-19. We have seen incredible stories of commitment to one another through stay-at-home orders, closure of schools and businesses, even the ways in which we interact as social beings. We have also seen amazing examples of creativity as we collectively figure out new ways of doing pretty much everything. Now, as various companies and organizations begin the slow and measured process of reopening, it is time for even more creativity and commitment.

At The Ability Center – an organization that has served people with disabilities for 100 years – we know the people we serve and support are some of the most vulnerable to the Coronavirus. With this in mind, it is our fervent hope, as businesses and community organizations begin reopening, we exercise creativity in the design of our physical and programmatic spaces so safe, socially distanced opportunities remain accessible for all; and we strongly urge all in our community to remain committed to safe, sanitary practices as we continue to fight the spread of this virus together.

Think of the people in your life you know and love whose lives are compromised by age or disability. Their lives, you would agree, are worth living – and protecting. This is our priority as well. We have heard the common refrain of this global health crisis: “We are all in this together.”

We couldn’t agree more, and we know to create the most disability-friendly community in the country, it takes all of us working together – especially in situations like these.

Should you desire disability-related support with your redesign or reopening, please consider connecting with The Ability Center. Let us help with your questions and concerns. To get started, use this “Things to Remember as We Reopen” fact sheet with general considerations.
