Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need dog-training experience?
No. We provide the training and guidance you need. A willingness to learn, practice consistently, and communicate with staff is most important.
Do most volunteer opportunities involve keeping a dog in my home?
Approximately 75% of our current Assistance Dogs volunteer opportunities involve having a dog stay in the volunteer’s home. The length of the commitment varies from short-term sitting to several months. We are also expanding opportunities that do not require housing a dog.
Can I volunteer if I already have pets?
Possibly. Home-based volunteers may have no more than two personal dogs and three cats. Personal pets must meet program health and behavior requirements, and dogs will need to complete a successful meet-and-greet.
Do I need a fenced yard?
Not necessarily. If your yard is not securely fenced, you will need a safe plan for exercise and bathroom breaks. Assistance Dogs in Training must remain on leash unless they are in a secure, enclosed area.
Will I attend training classes?
Yes, many dog-related roles require regular classes at The Ability Center. Class frequency and expectations depend on the volunteer role and the dog’s stage of training.
Can I choose the dog or volunteer role I want?
We welcome your preferences and interests. Final assignments are based on program needs and the best fit among the volunteer, household, role, and individual dog.
What if I have a vacation or emergency?
Our team will help coordinate approved care when possible. Volunteers are expected to communicate early and provide at least 30 days’ notice for planned absences whenever possible.
What if I am not able to house a dog?
We still encourage you to apply. Transportation, facility support, clerical work, and project-based opportunities may be available, and we are working to develop additional ways to volunteer without housing a dog. Availability depends on current program needs.
Is a background check required?
Yes. All Assistance Dogs Program volunteers must successfully complete a background check before beginning volunteer activities.
