Our Home Accessibility Program completes home modifications projects through grant funding to make homes for people with disabilities more accessible.
After you have completed your application and verified your income, staff from The Ability Center or an approved contractor will make a home visit to determine feasibility. Once approved, our lead carpenter will design a ramp or other amenity that meets your needs and building code regulations.
Projects include:
- Ramps (aluminum or wooden)
- Low-rise steps
- Stairlifts
- Grab-bars
For individuals with disabilities, getting in and out of a home can be extremely difficult.
This is true when a home lacks modern day Universal Design features such as a zero step entrance. Accessibility modifications such as ramps, hand-rails, and grab-bars are often the difference between staying independent in your home or placement in a costly facility. Accessible modifications do more than just improve safety, they provide continued access to friends, family and other community relationships.
Universal Design is the design and composition of an environment so that it can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people regardless of their age, size, ability, or disability.
