When we think of a New Year’s resolution, we usually think of things like saving money, working out more, eating healthier or maybe even to stop binge watching our favorite shows on Netflix! But what if for this new year that is approaching, we don’t just make a change, we change our mindset?
Disability is part of the human condition, and it is something that can happen to anyone at any stage of life. Therefore, I believe it is essential for people with disabilities, their families, and allies of the disability community to start advocating and do not be afraid to let your voice be heard!
This new year, we could all work together to break down barriers that our community faces not only accessibility wise but also when it comes to programs and policies that affect people with disabilities.
We could create a mindset where disability is not an afterthought but is intentionally included in every single decision that is made.
In this new year 2023 we could learn more about disability history and not only find pieces of ourselves in each story where we feel seen and represented. But also, keep these moments documented for future generations so they know that they are not alone.
Make communities and spaces where people with disabilities can connect with others and make new friendships as well as lean on each other for support.
Because we all know that there is power in numbers and there is nothing we can’t achieve if we do it together and that is a mindset that we all need to have this upcoming year!
This new year let’s take one step closer to creating a world where liberty and justice for all truly means all!
